IGIC 2026 Prepares to Unite MENA's Geotechnical Engineering Community for Its Most Ambitious Edition Yet

The 3rd Annual International Geotechnical Innovation Conference (IGIC 2026) is advancing towards its most expansive edition to date, with preparations well underway for what is set to be the most significant gathering of geotechnical engineering expertise in the MENA region this year.

Building on the momentum of two successful editions, which collectively welcomed over 1,000 delegates from 35+ countries, alongside more than 100 sponsors, exhibitors and institutional partners, IGIC 2026 arrives at a defining moment for the geotechnical engineering profession across the Middle East. Saudi Arabia's construction pipeline, valued at over $1.6 trillion in active projects, is accelerating from vision into full-scale physical execution. The ground conditions beneath that pipeline, karst formations, sabkha soils, hard and fractured rock, complex groundwater pressures and geohazards , represent some of the most technically demanding engineering environments in the world.

IGIC 2026 has been designed to meet that challenge directly. The conference brings together project owners, geotechnical contractors, specialist consultants, technology providers and machinery suppliers working at the forefront of ground engineering across MENA's giga and mega projects, including Red Sea Global, King Salman International Airport, Expo 2030 Riyadh and Qiddiya , for two days of technical sessions, keynote presentations, case studies, exhibition and high-value networking in Riyadh.

A landmark addition to this year's programme is the introduction of an exclusive Mining Geotechnics Workshop, the first of its kind in IGIC's history. As Saudi Arabia's mining sector expands rapidly under Vision 2030, the workshop addresses the ground engineering challenges most critical to safe and successful mining operations: tailings dam design and stability, open pit slope management, underground excavation, seismicity and geochemical risk. It represents a significant broadening of IGIC's technical scope and reflects the growing importance of geotechnical engineering to the Kingdom's extractive industries.

The 2026 edition will also feature an opening keynote address by Prof. Dr. Lyesse Laloui, Full Professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), Switzerland, one of the world's most distinguished figures in geomechanics and sustainable geotechnical engineering. His participation continues IGIC's tradition of convening globally recognised academic and industry leaders to anchor the conference's technical programme.

IGIC 2026 is formally supported by the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE), the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS), the Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) and the Society of Engineers UAE, the four most significant geotechnical institutions to have partnered with the conference across its three editions.
