NWC Launches Campaign to Stop Household Leaks

The National Water Company (NWC) has launched its national awareness campaign, “It’s Easy to Detect Leaks in Our Homes Ourselves.” The campaign aims at helping customers identify visible and hidden leaks in their homes through simple steps and turning water conservation from a public slogan into a daily practice, thereby contributing to water conservation and rational consumption.

NWC explained that the campaign is part of the responsibility and partnership programs between the Kingdom’s water service provider and its customers. The campaign focuses on raising awareness about the most common sources of leaks. It noted that the Water and Wastewater Services Guide issued by the Saudi Water Authority (SWA) stipulates in paragraphs (16) and (27) of Article 2 (General Provisions) that responsibility for internal leaks in properties lies with the consumer or service requester, and that the meter is the point at which the service provider’s responsibility ends; this makes periodic home inspections a direct benefit to the consumer.

The company revealed that its surveys and field studies show that high water consumption is often due to two main causes: first, internal leaks (93%), which, according to the “Rasshid!” (Conserve in Arabic) campaign, are most commonly found at the float valve and neck of the underground tank, as well as the flush valve in restrooms; and second, failure to update property data and unit divisions.

NWC explained that repairing leaks and installing approved water-saving fittings can reduce consumption by up to 46% and lower bills by up to 60%. The company emphasized that water-saving fittings bearing the “Water Conservation” label alone can help save approximately 30% of average consumption.

NWC urged customers to perform a simple periodic check by closing all water outlets in the home and monitoring the meter connection, as well as the ground and overhead tanks, to ensure that no water is flowing. It also encouraged customers to learn step-by-step methods for detecting home leaks through its digital channels, emphasizing that promptly repairing leaks prevents the waste of water resources and protects customers from high bills.
