SAR signs contracts to manufacture, supply locomotives, freight cars

Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) signed two contracts to manufacture and supply locomotives and freight cars in support of the Phosphate 3 expansion project, with Greenbrier and Progress Rail during the first day of InnoTrans, International Trade Fair for Transport Technology, in Berlin.

SAR said the contract with Greenbrier covers the design, manufacture, and supply of 782 new freight cars, while the agreement with Progress Rail covers the purchase of 33 new freight locomotives.

The two contracts aim to enhance the readiness and reliability of SAR’s locomotive and freight car fleet to support the phosphate transport expansion, boost capacity, and improve the efficiency and sustainability of rail freight operations.

SAR also signed a contract with Hitachi Rail to upgrade and modernize the signaling systems infrastructure of the Al Mashaaer Al Muqaddasah Metro Project (MMMP).

The project aims to enhance safety and network reliability, improve operational efficiency and system reliability, deploy advanced solutions and technologies across the rail system, and facilitate knowledge transfer and the development of technical expertise.
